The method used for drilling is determine during hydrogeological survey and it depends on the soil formation (Consolidated Formation or un-Consolidated Formation)
We mostly used two methods
Air rotary is used primarily for drilling in consolidated (rock) formations in rock wells with substantial overburden, the borehole is drilled with 8” drill bit and 6” casing installed thereafter up to the bottom.
_ Gravel pack is then fitted between the casing and the borehole wall. This filters water from the rocks.
For alluvial and top soil formations, surface/temporary casings may have to be used to cover the unstable formations in order to enable drilling works to be carried out smoothly.
The drilling method for drilling in unconsolidated (rock) formations. it involves drilling a 10” (254 mm) diameter hole. The casing size diameter must be 6” (152mm) to a maximum recommended depth. Sufficient annulus space will be available to be able to install gravel to the bottom of the hole.
Before drilling commence there is preparation of mud pits for mixing of polymers(bentonite) and water for used during drilling
